Study shows multiple risky behaviors associated with excessive internet use

Multiple risk behaviors (MRB) in teens consist of drug and alcohol use, smoking, non-use of seat belts and unprotected sex. Adolescents who engage in these activities may need an intervention, and enrollment in all girls boarding schools.
According to new research, MRB is associated with excessive computer and Internet use among teens. The study, which is published in the journal Preventive Medicine, experts from the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies, suggests that adolescents spend an average of 4.5 hours per day online. During this time, they are seeing negative behaviors that they could adopt.
In fact, teens who engage in excessive computer use had a 50 percent increased chance of engaging in MRB. High television use was also associated with these behaviors.
The study authors suggest that aggressive advertising and the increasing use of computers among teens may be the causes behind this trend. They concluded that future research should analyze how content affects teens in order to create stricter guidelines for screen time among children and adolescents.
