"When no boys are in the classroom girls take part more. They answer more questions, and they argue more. I guess you would say they debate more, but I remember the same situation happening when boys were in the class and a couple of them yelled out "Cat Fight!" The girls got angry, and they stopped debating."

Researchers suggest depression coping techniques vary by culture

By Staff Writer

According to new research, people of different cultures respond to depression in varying ways. As a result, teens who experience extreme feelings of sadness or suicidal ideation may benefit from enrolling in girls boarding schools, which aim to help troubled adolescents.

The recent study by University of Washington psychologists suggests the the pursuit of happiness varies among different cultures. For example, according to a survey, Asian subjects reported no relationship between depression and positive emotions. However, European-American participants had decreasing positive emotions in correlation to having more stress.

The study authors suggest that therapies that are effective for white populations may not be useful for Asians, who comprise 60 percent of the world population.

These results are currently being applied to therapy techniques for Japanese citizens who are recovering from natural disasters and the nuclear crisis in March as well as Chinese people who are dealing with post-traumatic stress after the 2008 Sichuan province earthquake.

According to research conducted by PBS, major depression affects approximately 15 million American adults - or about 8 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older - in a given year.
