"When no boys are in the classroom girls take part more. They answer more questions, and they argue more. I guess you would say they debate more, but I remember the same situation happening when boys were in the class and a couple of them yelled out "Cat Fight!" The girls got angry, and they stopped debating."

New research reveals extent of unintentional opioid pain medication overdoses

By Staff Writer

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, prescription abuse by teens exceeds marijuana use, and there are as many new abusers - aged 12 and older - of pain relievers as there are for marijuana. Adolescents who abuse these medications may benefit from the support and structure that is provided by girl boarding schools.

New research on prescription drug abuse suggests that unintentional overdoses of these substances has become an epidemic in the U.S. In fact, in 2007, the number of unintentional drug overdoses exceeded car accidents and suicides in some states. About 36 percent of these deaths were due to opioid pain medications.

For the report, which is published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and Duke University Medical Center observed data on the number of unintentional deaths due to prescription opioid pain killers.

They found that these drugs were linked to more overdose deaths than heroin and cocaine combined.
