"When no boys are in the classroom girls take part more. They answer more questions, and they argue more. I guess you would say they debate more, but I remember the same situation happening when boys were in the class and a couple of them yelled out "Cat Fight!" The girls got angry, and they stopped debating."

Today's Girls - Myths Limit Math and Science Success
I Want My Daughter to do Better in Math and Science
Girls don’t do well in math…Boys are better at science than girls…Computers and technical subjects are for boys…Girls excel in the arts, not the sciences…When it comes to math and science, the list of stereotypes reinforcing the idea that girls just aren’t any good is endless – but not necessarily true.
Differences in learning style are common between individuals (and much research has been done on the four primary learning style categories), but there are also learning style differences between girls and boys – and if your daughter finds herself in a math or science classroom geared towards boys, she might just begin to believe the myths surrounding girls’ abilities in these subject areas.
Historically, most co-ed institutions inherently gear the teaching of math and science towards boys simply because they adhere to relatively traditional teaching methods. So unless your daughter demonstrates a keen interest in the topic or the ability to learn regardless of environment or teaching style, a single-sex educational environment may be one of the best options for encouraging her to engage and excel in the mathematic or scientific arena.
Because single-sex educational environments are structured exclusively around the unique learning needs of either girls or boys, they’re far better equipped to present subject matter in a manner that is specifically designed to appeal to the sex of their student. In other words, science and math in an all-girls’ school will be taught in a way that appeals to girls’ gender-specific learning styles. As a result, girls in single-sex environments learn to successfully adapt their particular skills and strengths to subject matter that may have seemed difficult, confusing or overly challenging in a traditional, co-ed setting.
And while sending your daughter to a single-sex boarding or day school simply so that she can develop better math and science skills seems excessive, consider, too, the myriad of other advantages a single-sex environment offers when it comes to preparing girls for both academic and social success in college and beyond: greater self-confidence, greater statistical chances for academic and career success, a healthier sense of competition, greater levels of athletic involvement and achievement and exposure to a wider range of academic and experiential opportunities are just a few of the other benefits all-girl education provides.
